Katy Owens Empowered Path Occupational Therapy

About Katy

I work as an acute care occupational therapist in Northern Colorado and also own an occupational therapy private practice specializing in pain management. I earned my Master’s in Occupational Therapy from Colorado State University, where I was honored to receive the distinction of Outstanding Grad Student of the Class of 2022 from the College of Health and Human Services.

Before starting my career as an occupational therapist, I served in the United States Coast Guard. An injury and my subsequent rehabilitation sparked my interest in occupational therapy and fueled my passion for advocating a biopsychosocial approach to pain management combined with an occupation-based approach.

I had the opportunity to present at the Colorado State Association Annual Conference in both 2023 and 2024. I was also selected from a wide pool of applicants to speak at the UCHealth 2024 Symposium, where I shared with fellow therapy practitioners and other medical professionals the value of OT in pain management and the biopsychosocial model of pain.

My Approach

My approach utilizes a variety of modalities to retrain your brain and shift your pain experience. At times, we may be able to bring chronic pain into remission, while also working to increase our capacity to manage pain that is persistent. You will be given daily homework to complete outside of your weekly OT sessions, and the more diligently you engage in this homework, the more dynamic your results may be. You will learn about pain neuroscience and how the body and brain work together to create the pain experience. You will explore mindfulness tools to help calm your nervous system and reduce the intensity of pain. Additionally, you'll create a personalized "Low Pain Recipe" that identifies tools and strategies to help you have more low-pain days.

One technique available to us is Graded Motor Imagery, an evidence-based method for managing persistent pain and complex pain issues. While physical therapists can also offer this technique, the OT framework ensures that I always center my work within the biopsychosocial model. This means that I am consistently assessing and addressing the biological, psychological, and social factors that impact your pain.
